What if your car could drive itself? No, not just in terms of speed like with Adaptive Cruise Control, but literally steer itself as well? It may sound futuristic, but with the most recent addition to Ford Co-Pilot 360™, the future is now.

Ford’s Co-Pilot 360™ was already a comprehensive arsenal of amazing cutting-edge driver assist technology, but with new offerings including Active Drive Assist, Ford has raised the bar yet again.

“The stress of long highway drives remains a huge issue for drivers around the world,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s chief product development and purchasing officer. “By introducing driver-assist technologies like Active Drive Assist, Ford’s version of hands-free driving, we’re allowing our customers to feel more confident whenever they’re behind the wheel.”

Hands-Free Mode allows drivers on sections of certain pre-mapped, divided highways across all 50 states and Canada to drive their vehicle without touching the steering wheel, provided they continue to keep their eyes on the road.

Here’s how it works:

An advanced infrared driver-facing camera designed to track eye gaze and head movement will ensure that drivers are paying attention to the road while using Hands-Free Mode and Hands-On Lane Centering Mode, which will work on any road with painted lane lines. Drivers will then be notified when it’s time to go hands-on via visual prompts on their instrument cluster.

“Introducing Active Drive Assist with a driver-facing camera makes perfect sense because the vehicle helps relieve the stress and burden of driving but still leaves you fully in control,” said Thai-Tang. “And if you lose focus on the road ahead, Active Drive Assist will automatically warn and potentially slow the vehicle down until you’re ready to focus back up.”

Active Drive Assist will debut on select 2021 Ford vehicles beginning with the Mustang Mach-E lineup
