Ford’s Quality Momentum Continues With Strong 2026 J.D. Power Results

Ford’s ongoing effort to improve vehicle quality is producing results in more than one area. After ranking first among mainstream brands in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study, Ford followed that performance with another noticeable improvement in the 2026 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study, better known as APEAL.
While the Initial Quality Study focuses largely on problems experienced during the first 90 days of ownership, the APEAL Study looks at something broader: how owners actually feel about their vehicles. It measures areas such as design, performance, comfort, safety, usability, and the overall experience behind the wheel. For Ford, stronger results in both studies suggest that its recent quality improvements are beginning to affect not only reliability, but also everyday owner satisfaction.
Ford Climbs in the 2026 APEAL Rankings
Ford improved its overall APEAL score by 11 points in 2026, reaching an index score of 849. That improvement moved the brand from 12th to ninth among mainstream automakers. The gain comes during a year in which vehicle satisfaction improved across the industry. J.D. Power reported that overall owner satisfaction increased seven points to 858, the largest year-over-year improvement since 2018. Interior design, storage, exterior styling, and accessibility were among the biggest contributors to the industry-wide increase.
For Ford, the 11-point improvement indicates that its vehicles are becoming more satisfying in the areas customers interact with every day. That matters because a vehicle can be dependable without necessarily being enjoyable. APEAL attempts to measure whether owners continue appreciating the vehicle after the excitement of taking home something new begins to fade.
Mustang and Super Duty Continue to Stand Out
Two familiar Ford nameplates once again emerged as leaders in their respective segments. The Ford Mustang was named the most appealing Sporty Car for the second consecutive year, while the Ford Super Duty earned the title of most appealing Large Heavy-Duty Pickup for the third year in a row.
Those repeat finishes are particularly meaningful because the two vehicles appeal to very different buyers. Mustang customers may place greater emphasis on performance, styling, and the emotional side of driving, while Super Duty owners often need towing, hauling, durability, and practical capability.
Ford finished in the top three in four of its 10 award-eligible vehicle categories overall. The performance suggests that improvements are not isolated to a single product but are beginning to appear across a broader portion of the lineup.
Quality and Satisfaction Are Starting to Connect
The APEAL results become more significant when considered alongside Ford’s performance in the 2026 Initial Quality Study. Ford ranked highest among mass-market brands with 152 problems reported per 100 vehicles, while the F-150, Mustang, and Super Duty each won their individual segments. Seven of Ford’s 10 evaluated models also finished among the top three in their segments for initial quality, giving Ford the highest percentage of top-three finishes among automakers.
Ford has credited much of that improvement to changes throughout its development and manufacturing process. Engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and quality teams have become more closely integrated, suppliers are being involved earlier, and additional testing is being used to identify hardware and software problems before vehicles reach customers.
What the Results Mean for Ford Shoppers
For shoppers, Ford’s recent J.D. Power results offer a broader picture than an individual award or ranking. Initial quality measures whether vehicles are arriving with fewer problems, while APEAL measures whether owners actually enjoy living with them.
That combination is important. Buyers want vehicles that function properly, but they also want comfortable interiors, intuitive technology, appealing designs, strong performance, and features that make everyday driving easier.
