Ford EVs Now Compatible with Tesla Superchargers

March 3rd, 2024 by

In a groundbreaking development for the electric vehicle (EV) landscape, Ford has opened up access to Tesla Superchargers for its customers in the United States and Canada. This significant move positions Ford as the first non-Tesla automaker to provide its customers with the ability to charge on Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network.

A recent Cox Automotive Consumer Sentiment Study identified the lack of charging infrastructure as the second-largest barrier, following price, for potential electric vehicle buyers. As electric vehicle prices gradually decrease, ensuring widespread access to reliable fast-charging stations becomes pivotal to instill confidence in consumers opting for EVs.

With over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers spread across the U.S. and Canada, Ford’s decision to grant access to these charging stations effectively doubles the availability of reliable DC fast charging options through its BlueOval Charge Network. This strategic move aims to make electric vehicle ownership more convenient and accessible for Ford customers.

In a gesture of appreciation towards its electric vehicle customers, Ford is making the Fast Charging Adapter available at no cost for both new and existing customers enrolled in the BlueOval Charge Network until June 30, 2024. This adapter is essential for charging at the upgraded Tesla Superchargers. This makes Ford retail EV customers the pioneers in the industry, being the first to have the opportunity to order and utilize the Fast Charging Adapter.

For those interested in securing a complimentary Fast Charging Adapter, Ford encourages retail customers to place their orders before the June 30, 2024, deadline. Beyond this date, the adapter will be available for purchase at a reasonable cost of $230, which includes estimated taxes and shipping. This initiative ensures that early adopters and loyal Ford EV customers enjoy the benefits of seamless charging without incurring additional expenses.

Commercial customers utilizing Ford Pro services will be notified this Spring through mail or via their Ford Pro account manager about the process of ordering the Fast Charging Adapter. This ensures that both retail and commercial customers have the tools they need to make the most of the expanded charging infrastructure.

The BlueOval Charge Network further simplifies the charging experience for Ford EV owners by offering a seamless stored payment account accessible through the FordPass App or the Charge Assist App (soon to be rebranded as “Public Charge”) directly on the vehicle’s touchscreen. This eliminates the need for on-site credit card transactions. Once customers have created an account and activated Plug & Charge, Tesla Superchargers will seamlessly support Plug & Charge with Ford EVs. This means owners can simply plug in, and the charging process will commence automatically, with all charges conveniently managed through FordPass.

Looking ahead, Ford is committed to enhancing the charging experience for its customers by incorporating the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector in next-generation electric vehicles. This forward-thinking approach eliminates the need for an adapter to access Tesla Superchargers, showcasing Ford’s dedication to staying at the forefront of technological advancements in the EV sector.

In the words of Ford President and CEO Jim Farley, “Starting today, Ford EV customers will have access to more than 15,000 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada, more than doubling fast charging options on the BlueOval Charge Network. This move will improve the public charging experience by giving our customers even more choice and is a vital part of our growth as an EV brand.” The collaboration with Tesla not only expands charging options but also signifies a collaborative effort within the EV industry to create a more interconnected and user-friendly charging infrastructure. Ford’s move is not just a strategic business decision; it’s a significant step towards shaping the future of electric mobility.
