Ford’s Heat Pump Technology: Revolutionizing EV Efficiency in Cold Weather

As the world shifts toward electric vehicles (EVs), businesses are eagerly adopting EV fleets for their environmental and cost-saving benefits. However, operating electric vans in colder climates often comes with a major drawback – reduced driving range due to the need to heat the cabin in freezing temperatures. Ford has tackled this problem head-on with its innovative Vapour-Injected Heat Pump (VIHP) technology, designed to help electric vehicles perform more efficiently in sub-zero conditions.

 

Ford has equipped its European E-Transit Custom, E-Tourneo Custom, and enhanced range E-Transit models with this patented heat pump system, which works by capturing heat from the air outside the vehicle, even in temperatures as low as 20°F. The beauty of this system is that it uses “free” heat from the environment, which reduces the amount of energy needed to heat the cabin. This results in more battery power available for driving, allowing businesses to maximize their productivity.

 

Real-world and lab testing have demonstrated that the VIHP can increase the driving range of the E-Transit by between 7% and 10%. Ingo Krolewski from Ford explains the significance of this: “For businesses that use vans, every kilometre travelled between top-ups means less downtime and more money earned.”

 

Ford’s heat pump technology works much like the ones found in homes and offices, but with additional efficiency improvements. The system uses refrigerant gases to absorb and compress heat from the environment, reducing the need for excessive battery power. Plus, when the outside temperature rises above 70°F, the VIHP’s cooling system steps in to help reduce the need for air conditioning, again preserving battery life.

 

Ford’s commitment to refining this technology has been extensive, involving over 100 wind tunnel tests and 15,000 miles of on-the-road evaluation. The result is a highly effective system that maximizes efficiency and comfort year-round, regardless of the weather. The development process saw a collaborative effort from Ford’s engineering teams in the UK, Germany, and the US, ensuring that the technology is as reliable and effective as possible.
